OVERVIEW
Designed and implemented a WiFi-connected smart lock that controls a solenoid mechanism via digital input or MQTT commands. The hardware includes a full protection and driver circuit that lets the ESP8266 safely switch the solenoid through a relay. The schematic and PCB layout were created in KiCad and the firmware was written in Arduino IDE. The result is a lock that can be operated locally or remotely over the network.
THE CHALLENGE
- A solenoid needs far more current than an ESP8266 pin can supply, so it could not be driven directly.
- The lock had to respond reliably to two kinds of input: a local digital input and remote MQTT commands.
THE SOLUTION
- Designed a driver and protection circuit with a relay so the ESP8266 can switch the solenoid safely.
- Created the schematic and PCB layout in KiCad.
- Wrote firmware in Arduino IDE that handles both digital input and MQTT commands.
- Assembled the board and tested the lock and unlock behavior.
