OVERVIEW
Built a compact GPS tracker that acquires live coordinates and pushes them to an MQTT broker over a cellular network, without using any high-level MQTT library. All MQTT packets are constructed manually via raw AT commands sent to the SIM900 GSM module. The system reads location data from a NEO-6M GPS module, parses the NMEA sentences, and sends the result over GSM, so it can track position without depending on WiFi. The hardware was designed with a custom PCB layout in KiCad.
THE CHALLENGE
- The GSM module has no ready-made MQTT client, so the protocol had to be implemented at a low level.
- Location data needed to be sent reliably over a cellular connection instead of WiFi.
THE SOLUTION
- Built the MQTT packets manually and sent them through raw AT commands to the SIM900.
- Parsed NMEA data from the NEO-6M GPS module to extract live coordinates.
- Designed the schematic and PCB layout in KiCad.
- Assembled the hardware and tested the full flow from GPS reading to data arriving at the broker.
