OVERVIEW
Designed and built a full IoT pipeline to control an air conditioner remotely over the internet. The system captures original AC remote signals, decodes them, and re-transmits them on command via MQTT, eliminating the need for proprietary apps. It is built around an ESP32 with a custom IR transceiver circuit, covering the whole path from circuit design in KiCad to firmware and remote control. As a result, the AC can be operated from anywhere with an internet connection.
THE CHALLENGE
- The AC remote's infrared signals had to be captured and reproduced accurately for the AC to respond.
- Control had to work over the internet without relying on a proprietary app from the manufacturer.
THE SOLUTION
- Designed an IR send and receive circuit in KiCad, using a transistor-driven IR LED and an IR receiver module.
- Captured and decoded the original remote signals, then re-transmitted them from the ESP32.
- Exposed the control commands through MQTT so the AC can be triggered remotely.
- Wrote the firmware and tested the full flow from command to AC response.
